Type:
Modern Design
London 1953
Fully hallmarked Silver
Sterling (925)
Brighton College of Art
Diameter: 15 cm
Weight: 235 g
Provenance: The GERALD & JANET BENNEY Collection of Silver - Bonhams 20 November 2013 Lot 114
Catalogue note: This was possibly made earlier and similar to other noted works made by Gerald while at the Brifghton College of Art
This was probably among the frst pieces of silver that Gerald Benney made. His father Ernest Sallis Benney was Principal of the Brighton School of Art and would have had access to their hallmark to assay later.
Gerald studied under Dunstan Pruden there until 1948. Anthony Elson also studied under Pruden in 1955 and he told me: 'The first thing that Pruden asked his fulltime students to make was a small bowl. This involved raising, planishing and shaping and finally soldering and all this took several weeks'
