Designer British Silver by Derek Styles and John AndrewDesigner British Silver by Derek Styles and John Andrew

'Designer British Silver from studios established 1930 to 1985' is a beautifully produced 560 page slip case edition weighing over 4 kilos and retails at £75. This is a major work and should remain the definitive book on the period for some time to come. It has taken over 20 years of research and 7 years writing.

It features: Introduction by Gordon Hamme; an overview of this important period; biographical chapters on the 50 major silversmiths; brief information of over 200 others; where pieces can be seen; a glossary and is fully indexed with full colour illustrations.

We have a limited number of copies that I can offer at £50 collected from Styles Silver in Hungerford or posted within the UK for £55.

If you would like a copy please phone the shop on 01488 683922 or email to george@styles-silver.co.uk.

If you wish to collect from shop please inform us date and approximate time before you come to ensure we have them here and that we are open.

£220

Gwendoline Cross was born in Bristol in 1900 and attended Bristol Art School. She married Australian artist Fred Whicker in 1931 and lived in Clifton, Bristol and both of them exhibited at the Royal West of England Academy annual exhibitions. They moved to Wood Lane, Falmouth and she registered her hallmark in London in 1948. She made cutlery, jewellery boxes with hand beaten silver decorated with either enamel or semi-precious stones and jewellery. They moved from the New Bristol Arts Club to the St. Ives Society of Artists, with Gwen as secretary and Fred treasurer and exhibited there until their deaths. She produced etchings, paintings, drawings, sculpture, jewellery and silverwork. Much of her silver work has not been traced as it was sent to Fred's sister in Canada on her death. A retrospective exhibition of their work was held at the Falmouth Art Gallery in 1994 when 14 pieces of silverwork were loaned from private collections.
