Blunt & Wray were Ecclesiastical metalwork suppliers in Clerkenwell Road with 15 employees and 'DIADEM' was their trade name for domestic silverware. Anthony Elson purchased the Company in 1966

Brian Cain was born in 1931 and served his apprenticeship with Wakely and Wheeler. He studied on day release at the Central School of Arts and Crafts with contemporaries John Bartholomew and Lew Marlow. Payne and Son of Oxford and George Tarratt in Leicester retailed some of the pieces he designed for Wakely and Wheeler in the late 1950's. Cain later moved to C J Vander where he was the company's design manager

Cecil Frederick Colyer studied at Cambridge and spent time in Nigeria in the Colonial Service. Returning to England he ran a boys club at Uppingham School and during the war was a pilot instructor for the RAF.In 1952 was appointed as Head of Metal and Woodwork at Bryanston School. He was a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Turners and registered his London mark in 1965 then later in Edinburgh. One of his students, Simon Beer, called him '...an inspired teacher'. He died in 1994.

Designed and hand made by Charles Hall - Commissioned by Sir Colin Southgate to mark the demerger of Thorn from the EMI group.Charles Hall studied at Hornsey College of Art 1963-5 and the RCA 1965-8 before establishing his studio and workshop in Cornwall in 1972. A founding member of Contemporary British Silvermiths, he has undertaken many important commissions.

Desmond Clen-Murphy (1924-2010). He studied with Gerald Benney at Brighton School of Arts and Crafts where they were taught silversmithing by Dunstan Pruden. He established a workshop in Brighton in 1952 and taught at Worthing. In the 1950's gave Benney a hand and also worked with Louis Osman. The majority of his work was made as commissions from the Goldsmiths' Company, Universities, Churches and the Government. His work rarely turns up apart from the Chichester Cathedral goblet he designed for Aurum in 1976 - some of his work can be seen in the Treasury there

Francis Adams was born in Hungary and learnt his craft in wrought iron. He worked in London for Starkie Gardner & Co, the wrought iron specialists that also worked in bronze, lead, silver and gold. He taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts from 1906-58 where Leslie Durbin was amongst his pupils. In 1920 he opened his own workshop and he died in 1961

GEORGE EDWARD GRANT was born in 1935 and studied at the Central School of Art before being apprenticed to Leslie Durbin. He later worked for Michael Murray before setting up a workshop in Rosebery Avenue in 1959. He later moved to Chelmsford where he also taught. A fine craftsman and if other silversmiths had any problems they would go to George for him to 'sort it'.

He worked for David Mellor and Elkington before becoming a partner in Silver Workshop in the early 1960's with two RCA contemporaries Ronald Stevens and Tony Laws. When they stopped trading in 1972 he became Head of 3D Design at Hornsey College of Art and established Keith Redfern Designs

Opened own studio in 1957 and immediately received important commissions, including a mace to be presented by the Queen Mother
This pen tray was designed and made by Lessons but bears the sponsor's mark TJB. Lessons hadn’t yet registered a maker's mark. While researching my book - British Designer Silversmiths at the library at Goldsmiths' Hall, I discovered an image of this piece in Lessons’ folder.
(Thomas J Boucher 1897-1988 was the resident craftsman at the Royal College of Art for many years)

Richard designed this service 'Abovo' as a 7 piece place setting while at the Royal College of Art. Despite orders from leading stores for a stainless steel version, he could not find finance for the tooling, only the production costs. He did make a few sets in silver, one for an experimental auction of contemporary silver in the late 1980's. He was pleased when this achieved £5000 as they normally retailed for about £3000 at the time.
